Trail Description
Located just north of Vancouver, BC; the well known Baden Powell trail is named after Lord Baden-Powell in honor of British Columbia's 100th anniversary as a Canadian province and founder of the Scouting movement. Much of the trail was originally laid by Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. The Baden Powell trail traverses the North Shore from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Deep Cove in West Vancouver. The Baden Powell trail offers a variety of experiences and allows you to mark off several North Vancouver backcountry landmarks off your bucket list: The view at Quarry Rock, crossing the Seymour River bridge, the Twin Falls in Lynn Canyon, the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, Grouse Mountain, Cleveland Lake and Dam, views of the Lions, Hollyburn Lodge, and finally Black Mountain and Eagle Bluff with near 360 degree views of Howe Sound, Georgia Strait and downtown Vancouver. Areas of the trail are pet and dog friendly. As well, a large stretch of the Baden Powell trail between Grouse Mountain and Lynn Valley is well suited for mountain biking. Many mountain biking exclusive trails criss-cross this stretch.
If you plan on hiking the whole trail, expect a full day hike, an overnight or you may need to consider trying one segment at a time. However, if you are attempting to cross the entire trail in one day, it's recommended to start very early in the day and closest to the Summer solstice for maximum daylight hours.
This trail is not easy by any standard and starting well prepared, hydrated and with enough food, water and supplies to last. Plan to re-hydrate and re-fuel at the Grouse Mountain Parking Lot. Their facilities has a free water bottle refill station.
At times, the Baden Powell Trail crosses or merges with other trails such as the Trans Canada Trail. If you are not alert and paying attention to the correct trail markers, it's possible to become disoriented and end up on the wrong trail. This is highly common in the Brothers Creek area of the trail.
