The Grouse Grind trail is open summer to fall. Starting in the 2010 Summer season, the gondola ride down doubles in price to $10. A sign at the top mentions that hikes going downhill are currently not permitted.

You have to do the Grind at least once in your life. It's a fun challenge and do not be daunted by things you have heard about it. Some people are more adaptable to a continuous uphill slog, while other people may be super sporty but not used to non-horizonal sports. Case in point; I took a fitness instructor who is over 10 years my junior up the Grind and I handily beat her. Even though she is more fit overall than I am, she is not much of a hiker. I wouldn't say the Grind is "fun" but it is just a must-do if you live here. The feeling you have when you reach the top is unbeatable.
